Iron Hand Brewing
About
Iron Hand Brewing is a brewpub inside a converted Baptist church in downtown Mobile’s De Tonti Square Historic District, and it calls itself the city’s oldest brewery. The idea for it came up in a casual conversation on vacation, and it opened in 2019. The building went up in the mid-1920s as Hunter Memorial Baptist Church and later served the Waterfront Rescue Mission. The name honors Henri de Tonti, an explorer born in Italy who helped found Mobile in 1702 and wore a metal prosthetic after losing a hand, earning the nickname Iron Hand. Brewing started on a one-barrel system and has moved up to five barrels, with rotating small batches alongside favorites such as Rebecca’s First Amber Ale and Lost Ring Porter. The scratch kitchen makes sourdough pizza and bread and house-cured corned beef, and the brewery hosts trivia, a homebrew festival and private parties.
