Goat Island Brewing
About
Goat Island Brewing is a Cullman brewery with two taprooms. Homebrewers Mike Mullaney and Gery Teichmiller met at Cullman Oktoberfest in 2012, and with John Dean and Brad Glenn they began pouring their beer at a local brewpub as the Blue Moose Brew Crew. The four friends formed Goat Island in 2015, built out an empty warehouse on nights and weekends, and opened in April 2016, bringing commercial brewing back to the city after a gap dating to the 1800s. While checking storm damage downtown, Dean found a handwritten recipe from 1800s saloon owner William Frederick Richter, which became Richter’s Pilsner, the brewery’s first canned beer. The name comes from Goat Island on nearby Smith Lake. The original taproom has a big music stage, and The Goat at Cotton Creek, opened downtown in 2025, runs a three-barrel pilot system for small batches.
